Saturday 16th May 2020 – Day Fifty Four

Good morning, I hope that the beginning of the week is going well for you so far. I am taking a break from killing zombies (not for my benefit, you understand!), but playing with James.

Thank you to Anna for her explanation of the “If “W” Is Double U, Why Is It Made Of Two Vs?” The reasons for this “confusion” are historical, and mostly to do with attempts to represent the sounds of different European languages using the Latin alphabet.  If anyone is interested, here’s a brief explanation:

What can I share with you today?

A couple of request this morning:-

From Theresa:

Can anyone recommend a website /s  where I can order some fresh vegetables online?

Contact me here if you have any recommendations

From Stephen:

Does anyone know of a reliable source of face masks? – especially FFP3 which is the top EU standard and has an inward leakage of only 2%.  This is becoming a more serious question for vulnerable people every day.  I would not go out without one.

Contact me here if you have any recommendations

From Chris T:

Something savoury instead of sweet. Easy bread cutlets in 10 minutes.
Crispy bread cutlets can be easily prepared in just ten minutes using common ingredients that are found in your kitchen.

ART & CULTURE

From Genia:

Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam Anyone who is a fan of this tragic, ingenious painter can see his works up close (or, almost up close) by virtually visiting this museum.
The largest collection of artworks by Vincent van Gogh, including over 200 paintings, 500 drawings, and over 750 personal letters.

From Rosalind:

“Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake” at Sadler’s Wells (with blokes as swans).
It’s a famous production but I’d not heard of it until I stumbled across it on YouTube. Completely different from the stylised classical ballet – it’s witty, sexy, modern and moving. The swans are much more believable – powerful, sinuous, threatening – not pretty girls in tutus. I really recommend it.

From Chris B:

National Garden Scheme.
Deep in the Dorset countryside, Andrew and Judith Hussey have restored this five-acre Old Rectory garden to combine the tranquillity of an established country garden with the energising infusion of new design and planting.

From Rocio:

FUNNY SIDE OF LIFE

From Theresa:

With Deep Regret:

It is with great sadness that I have to mention the loss of a few further local businesses around our town.

The bra manufacturer has gone bust,

the specialist in submersibles has gone under,

the manufacturer of food blenders has gone into liquidation,

a dog kennel has had to call in the retrievers,

the suppliers of paper for origami enthusiasts has folded,

the Heinz factory has been canned as they couldn’t ketchup with orders,

the tarmac laying company has reached the end of the road,

the bread company has run out of dough,

the clock manufacturer has had to wind down and gone cuckoo,

the Chinese has been taken away,

the shoe shop has had to put his foot down and given his staff the boot,

the laundrette has been taken to the cleaners!

The pet shop has gone to the dogs.

The butcher’s had the chop,

the Greengrocer is in a vegetative state.

The venetian blind shop has closed, so it’s curtains for us all.

The wall paper shops taken a pasting.

The fish mongers been battered.

The florists are now pushing up the daisies.

The milkman’s lost his bottle and finally,

the bread man is toast.

That’s all for now!

Be safe
