Tuesday 9th June 2020 – Day Seventy Seven
Good morning all, hope that your night was a good one.
I mentioned in yesterday’s update that we are organising a weekly language course. A number of you have asked for more details. So here we are:
From Constantine:
We would like to invite you to take part in our weekly classes of French Language Conversations.
This social class will teach you the basics and fundamentals of the french language, and enable you to practice your new learned skills with your colleagues and teacher(s) in the class.
The classes are conducted on a powerpoint presentation for guidance and explanation, and then we utilise the multiple slides to interact amongst each other in the class. The subjects covered are vast, from vocabulary and grammar to local lingo’s and pronunciations. In most part, we try to focus on making the classes as vocal and ‘conversational’ as possible. This class is ideally suited for people with a beginner to intermediate level of French. The classes will be conducted by one or two people to help you have the most support. Celine and I, the main teachers, are Belgian nationals who have lived in London for +5 years.
We look forward to having new members on board!
If you would like further information about how to join the class, please let me know.
What can I share with you today?

From Gary S: This is a fab fish & chip shop that opened in St Anne’s Court just before Lockdown. They reopened for take away only a couple of weeks ago. Really lovely – fresh, good choice and prices, friendly and efficient. Could even get some and eat in splendid isolation in Soho Square!
ART & CULTURE
From Peter H:
Hi John maybe you could share this with members with long memories.
When Mae West was considered box office poison in 1939 she commented. “Harry Brandt the movie mogul has done the movie industry wrong with his comment on movie stars as box office poison. Every time box office business dropped off, he re-ran my film “She Done Him Wrong” – and they called me the ‘mortgage – lifter. The only picture to make money in the past four months was “Snow White”, and that might have done even better if I’d played the lead!” – Cheers Peter

INFORMATION
From Next Door:
Aldwych Post Office now open and NatWest Strand now open to 3pm.
The Post Office is open 9.30 am to 3.30 pm every day.
From Gary L:
Here’s another piece for the newsletter/blog – (in my opinion) Pancho Lewis Is a fantastic Counsellor – a breath of fresh air.
From Dawn P (Queens Gallery):
One of the highlights for me last week was Dawn’s wonderful Zoom session focusing on three paintings.
For those of you who attended, here is the ‘homework’:
To create a visual representation of a word…inspired by the painting of The Misers
Those who wish may arrange objects to represent a word- love, envy, greed, laziness, wisdom, strength and so on, please use any words of your choice. If possible use the Fibonacci Sequence as an inspiration for the arrangement, and do include yourself if you wish to do so. The finished piece could be shown as a photograph, a tableau, or a piece of art. Have fun!
FUNNY SIDE OF LIFE
From Jerry: (shared words of wisdom)
Today, I interviewed my grandmother for part of a research paper I’m working on for my Psychology class.
When I asked her to define success in her own words, she said, “Success is when you look back at your life and the memories make you smile.”
Today, I asked my mentor – a very successful businessman in his 70s- what his top 3 tips are for success.
He smiled and said, “Read something no one else is reading, think something no one else is thinking, and do something no one else is doing.”
That’s all for now!
